Brooks Ghost 18: Is It a Good Fit for Your Daily Walk?
October 14, 2026

A good walking shoe should feel comfortable from the start, hold your foot securely and still feel good when you have been out for a while. The Brooks Ghost 18 is a running shoe that Brooks also recommends for walking. It has cushioning for roads and pavements, so it is worth a look if that is where you do most of your walking.

Think about where you will wear it. A day exploring a city is different from a hike over wet rocks or muddy paths. The Ghost 18 belongs on a shortlist for everyday paved walks and easy runs. Whether it belongs on your feet comes down to how it fits and feels.
What you get—and what the numbers mean
The cushioning is called DNA LOFT v3, a foam Brooks makes using nitrogen. The fabric over the foot is airy mesh, with a soft knitted tongue under the laces and an updated liner inside. Brooks uses its RoadTack rubber on the bottom of the shoe for grip. The manufacturer's published men's specifications give a 10 mm heel-to-toe drop and a weight of 10.2 ounces, or 289.2 grams. The weight can vary with the size and version you buy.
Heel-to-toe drop means how much higher the heel sits than the front of the foot. That number does not tell you how soft the whole shoe will feel, and a bigger number is not necessarily better. For a walker, the more useful question is whether the shoe feels natural through the entire step. If it feels different from your usual shoes, take your time deciding. Walking around in it will tell you more than a number on the box.
When you try it on, notice how the fabric and tongue feel against your foot. The top of the shoe should hold the foot without making you tighten the laces until they press uncomfortably. A padded feel can be pleasant, but it cannot compensate for the wrong width or a heel that slips. A fancy name for the cushioning cannot make up for a shoe that does not fit you.
Start with width, then judge the whole fit
The official men's product listing offers narrow B, standard D, wide 2E and extra-wide 4E options. Availability differs by size and colour. Those choices are helpful, but the width label is only a starting point. You still need to try the shoe.
Try the shoes with the socks you intend to wear on your walks. Lace both shoes, stand up and walk around rather than judging only while seated. Check that the longest toe has comfortable space, that the sides are not squeezed and that the heel remains secure. Pay attention to the area across the top of the foot as well as the toe box. A shoe can be long enough and still feel too tight across the top or too loose around the heel.
Do not buy a painful fit on the assumption that it will become the right fit after a few outings. If you use an orthotic, include it in the fitting. If a doctor or foot specialist has recommended particular footwear, check before changing it. The Ghost 18 may be comfortable for some people and unsuitable for others with different foot problems.
For an online purchase, read the exact seller's return policy first. Check whether indoor try-on is permitted, what counts as worn and how returns are handled. Keep packaging until you have made your decision. A good return policy matters when you cannot try different widths in a shop.
Match the shoe to your plans
Think of the Ghost 18 primarily as a road-and-pavement option. Brooks identifies road running, daily runs and walking among its intended uses. That makes it worth considering for neighbourhood walks and holidays with plenty of paved sightseeing. For rougher ground, you may need a different kind of shoe.
Before travelling, consider the whole itinerary. A day of streets and museums is different from a day of slippery coastal paths. If you will be on wet or rough paths, think about grip and weather protection. You may be better off packing a second pair than expecting one shoe to handle everything.
If you want to wear it at work, check your workplace rules and consider the surfaces you stand on. The fact that a shoe is comfortable on a short walk does not establish that it will remain comfortable through a full shift. The same caution applies to buying it for travel: wear a new pair on several shorter local outings before making a long sightseeing day its first real test.
What an independent tester found
In a July 2026 review, Tom's Guide described the Ghost 18 as comfortable and dependable for everyday running, but less lively than some newer daily trainers. The reviewer found the update relatively modest and questioned its value against a discounted Ghost 17. That is one tester’s experience. It is useful to read, but your own feet get the final say.
You do not have to buy the newest model to get a comfortable walking shoe. If a previous version fits comfortably and is available from a reputable seller, compare its price and return terms with those of the Ghost 18. On the other hand, if the Ghost 18 fits better, saving money on a less comfortable pair may not be much of a bargain.
We have not personally wear-tested the Ghost 18 for this article. This is a researched buying guide drawing on published product information and an identified independent review. Use this guide to decide what to look for when you try a pair on.
A practical way to decide
Put the Ghost 18 on your shortlist if most of your walking is on paved surfaces and you want to compare a cushioned running-style shoe. Then test it against at least one alternative if possible. Walk at your ordinary pace, turn, stop and notice whether anything rubs or feels unstable. The best choice is the one you can comfortably use for your actual outings, not the one with the most impressive description.
Buy from a seller you can identify, confirm the exact model and width, and check current availability at the point of purchase. Prices and stock change, so check the details with the retailer before you buy.
The Ghost 18 gives you a cushioned road shoe with several widths to try. If it holds your foot comfortably and suits the walks you enjoy, it may be a good choice. If it rubs, slips or simply does not feel right, keep looking. You are buying a shoe for your feet, not for its reputation.
